Guinea - the adventurous one

Our most adventurous destination. Minimal tourism infrastructure, extraordinary landscapes - the Fouta Djalon highlands, the Loos islands, the Saala falls, Conakry's street markets, and conversations with locals who rarely meet outside travellers.

The country

Guinea is where we send people who want the feeling of genuine exploration. Tourism barely exists; roads are variable; accommodation is basic or community-run - and the reward is a country that meets you without any script.

What to see

  • Conakry - capital, Atlantic shoreline, the Loos islands off the coast
  • Fouta Djalon - the highland plateau, waterfalls, cool climate, Fulani culture
  • Labé - Fouta's main town, colonial architecture
  • Douki - trekking base in the highlands
  • Saala falls - cascade in the Fouta
  • Dabola - gateway to central Guinea
  • Samaya, Waliya, Kaporo - river villages and rural communities

Travel style

Guinea calls for flexibility. Distances take longer than you'd expect; guesthouses may share bathrooms; electricity is unreliable outside the capital. We travel in small 4×4 vehicles with experienced drivers and local fixers. What you get in exchange is a country few travellers ever see.

Safety

Border zones with Niger, Burkina Faso and northern Mali are avoided. The rest of the country - the Fouta Djalon, the coast, central Guinea - is reliably open.
